Grand Reopening December 2019

Bellavista B&B's Location & Island Transportation

St. Thomas is about 12 miles long by 3 miles wide, and the historic harbor town of Charlotte Amalie is centrally located on south side looking out over the Caribbean Sea. It is a 10-minute drive from the airport on the west side of town and nearly a 20-minute drive to Red Hook on the East End. The island is only 32 square miles so unless you are on a boat, you really cannot go much further than 20-minutes from town!

Walking to Town and Getting Around...

Bellavista Bed & Breakfast sits on Denmark Hill overlooking Charlotte Amalie. There are steps at the end of our street which lead down the hill into town. It is a five-minute walk (less than 1/3 mile) to Main Street. However, it may take a bit longer walking back as we are situated 300 feet above sea level. If you prefer, a taxi will drive you quickly up the hill for $5 per person.

There are a number of restaurant possibilities in town and also in nearby Frenchtown to the west or Havensight to the east ---a 15-minute stroll along the waterfront in either direction or a 5-minute drive if you prefer.

There are many beaches on the island to explore and experience. Our premiere beach, Magen's Bay is two miles away which is about an 8-minute drive on our meandering island roads, and the popular East End beaches are a 15-20 minute drive.

The Morningstar Beach on the other side of the harbor is accessible via 15-minute ferry ride from the Charlotte Amalie waterfront. You will also find ferries here departing for St. John and the British Virgin Islands.

Directions to Bellavista B&B from the Airport...

IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not use a web mapping service, such as Google, Bing, Map Quest or a GPS which will take you to our mailbox which is on a different road than our main entrance. Do not follow an alternative route to Catherineberg Road which would lead up a very steep and narrow road not fit for rental vehicles. The following route follows two main roads on the island -Route 30 and Route 35-and is the simplest way to our property.

Please follow these detailed driving directions to Bellavista Bed & Breakfast.

Renting a Car -- The Adventurous Option...

A rental car is an option but it is not a necessity. It's true that renting a vehicle gives you more freedom to explore the island and sometimes is more cost-effective than relying on taxis. But do keep in mind that we drive on the left, the roads are not well marked, and the published maps are not very detailed. To further confuse matters, Google maps and GPS systems are not always accurate. But if you are feeling adventurous, we will arm with directions, provide our specially designed local map, and have a parking space available for you.

A few tips if you are planning to rent a vehicle:

Make your reservation in advance.
Get in line as soon as possible at the airport!
In terms of size, a smaller car is better than a large SUV.
Jeeps are fun but four-wheel drive is not required on St. Thomas.
If you want to take the car ferry to St. John, make sure your rental agency allows it.
For safety reasons, it is not advisable to rent a scooter and bike rental is not available on St. Thomas--the explanation will be obvious as you traverse our steep, narrow, winding roads.

Remember to Keep Left!

Taking Taxis and Keeping it Simple...

If you prefer to leave the driving to someone else, we have taxi drivers that we call on regularly for our guests. They are very fair, friendly and reliable. They will take you wherever you would like to go and can make arrangements to bring you back.

It is quirky but important to note that street addresses are meaningless to taxi drivers and local residents who rely on island landmarks for lack of street signs. When giving "our address" to taxi drivers, we say "Bellavista B&B is located above Garden Street, below the Governor's residence, by Villa Santana." These three neighborhood landmarks pinpoint the location of our property.

Local Taxi Fares to/from Bellavista B&B:
Airport $8 per person each way
(plus $2-$4 per piece of luggage)
Downtown $5 per person each way
Frenchtown $6 per person each way
Havensight $6 per person each way
Magen's Bay $8 per person each way
East End $10 per person each way
Island Taxi
St. Thomas Taxi

Another Route -- "The Dollar Bus"...

For the truly travel savvy and budget-minded, the local "dollar bus" provides another option. The route supports local destinations (the hospital, main shopping center, and university) bypassing most beaches and visitor attractions, but it does provide service from downtown Charlotte Amalie to Red Hook. The fare is $1 per person for shorter rides and $2 for the complete town to East End route. It takes a while longer to get where you are going and the ride is not particularly scenic, but you will experience true island culture along the way.

Island-Hopping Possibilities...

It is easy and enjoyable to make day trips to our neighboring islands. Ferries to St. John run every hour from Red Hook ($6 for a 15-minute ride), and at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm from Charlotte Amalie ($12 for a 40-minute ride). The return trips are priced the same and are offered hourly from Red Hook until midnight and at 3:45 pm to Charlotte Amalie. There is also car ferry service running every half hour from Red Hook to St. John with the last one returning is at 7:00 pm (approximately $50 roundtrip).

St. John Ferry

There are also numerous ferry options to the British Virgin Islands. There is frequent service daily to Tortola from Red Hook and Charlotte Amalie (approximately $50 roundtrip). The trips to Jost Van Dyke run Friday through Wednesday from Red Hook ($70 roundtrip). Ferries depart for Virgin Gorda from Charlotte Amalie on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday ($70 roundtrip) and from Red Hook on Thursday and Sunday ($80 roundtrip).

It not necessary to buy ferry tickets in advance, you simply show up, pay your fare and hop on! It is always a good idea to call 24-hours in advance and confirm trips to the BVI since they are subject to change. Also note that sometimes the ferry between Charlotte Amalie and St. John does not run if there are too few passengers.

Other islands are close in proximity, but since ferry service is infrequent or nonexistent, they are not easy day trips but could be possible destinations to extend your vacation. There is seaplane service to St. Croix (approximately $125 roundtrip) and "puddle-jumping" flights from the airport to the "Spanish Virgin Islands" - Puerto Rico, Culebra, and Vieques--and "down island' -St. Martin and beyond.
